Biography

Nick Marks

New York based artist Nick Marks is a composer and producer who takes listeners on “a mesmerizing journey through jazz, electronica, neo-soul, and cinematic music” (Illustrate Magazine). His ethos is to provide a soundtrack that helps people feel energized and at ease, facilitating deep emotional connections to moments of everyday life. Marks’ music resonates across the full spectrum of emotions, a reflection of his view that life is multi-faceted with layers of beauty and complexity.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Marks grew up among that city’s innovative musical scene, absorbing the cross-pollination of jazz, neo-soul, R&B, funk, latin and hip-hop influences. Marks is a conservatory trained jazz and classical pianist, and self taught composer. His training is combined with a deep passion and study of film scores, synthesizers and electronic instruments. This has informed a sound that is wholly his own, designed to stimulate the soul, body and mind.

Since moving to New York in 2016, Marks has firmly established himself as an in-demand composer, producer and musical director. He composes scores for feature film and television, is a frequent collaborator and arranger for various cross-genre artists on the tipping points of jazz, neo-soul, R&B and neoclassical. His music has been performed in iconic venues including Carnegie Hall.

Having been the ‘invisible hands’ playing an integral role behind numerous scoring projects, Marks released his debut EP, Cinematic Chromatics Vol. I in 2023, described by Earmilk as ““a sonic masterpiece that will leave you craving more”.

Marks’ music has received radio support from BBC6, JazzFM, WDET FM, KEXP, Soho Radio, Bandcamp Weekly and Jazzwise Magazine,  who described his music as “Flying Lotus and Jacob Collier combining to write the latest Blade Runner soundtrack, supervised by Thundercat, recorded by the Metropole Orkest”. Marks’ tracks PARADISO and PRELUDE/ARC OF LIGHT were both selected for Spotify’s Editorial Playlist “FRESH FINDS JAZZ”.
