Cinematic Chromatics Vol. III
Cinematic Chromatics Vol. III is the final installment of a trilogy series, and has already been praised as an “…an out-of-this-world blend of jazz, jazztronica, beats, and cinematic music”. For the past two years, Marks has been steadily taking listeners through a journey of his sonic universe, gracefully moving between various aural ‘mood-boards’ and showcasing his musical universe. In this time, his music has found new fans all over the world, been heralded as a “great fusion of hip-hop, funk, jazz where Weather Report can sit next to Thundercat”, received acclaim from prominent tastemakers, as well as be included in Spotify’s “Best of Fresh Finds Jazz 2024”.
Marks has used the series to introduce his sonic palette and establish himself as an artist comfortable moving between styles and genres while creating cohesive narratives. Vol. III represents a hybrid of cinematic jazztronica mixed with soul/R&b, neo-soul and lo-fi beats aesthetics, and finishes with a neo-classical chamber piece. Each piece takes listeners on a different trip: from floating through infectious grooves that could come from Brooklyn or Paris, a multi-dimensional drum’n’bass track crossed with hints of Coltrane and Hip-Hop that sounds like ‘the matrix’, to ethereal chamber strings and vocals that evoke an otherworldly landscape.
While the trilogy has been separated into three EP releases, the body of work lives as one, concluding a cycle that began in February 2020 when Marks first wrote his demos that became the centerpieces of this work: “…Imagine Anomalie and Herbie Hancock collaborating on planet Motown with the Metropole Orkest, under the supervision of Quincy Jones. That’s the magic Marks brings to the table.” The featured single release is a new track called Current Location, a metaphorical title reflecting the malleable and amorphas definitions of place, time and space. This sound best describes Marks’ latest sonic exploration, taking listeners to another corner of his sonic universe. Never content to rest on his laurels, Marks is always looking to push the boundaries of what is possible musically, as well as himself artistically.
